Explore the Public Garden Near Cambridge

For a fun-filled day outdoors, head to the Public Garden. It opened in 1837, making it the first public botanical garden in the United States. Here is some of what you can discover when you explore the Public Garden near our Cambridge apartments:

Make Way for Ducklings Sculpture

Standing on the corner of Beacon and Charles, the duckling sculpture was created by sculptor Nancy Schon. She based the piece on Robert McCloskey's bestselling book, Make Way for Ducklings." It represents a mama duck and her ducklings as they make their way toward the island in the garden's lagoon.

Ether Monument

Standing since 1868, the Ether Monument is the oldest monument at the Public Garden. It highlights a medical discovery first used at Massachusetts General in 1846. Atop the monument, the two figures, created by John Quincy Adams Ward, were designed to represent a good samaritan caring for an injured stranger.

9/11 Memorial

Created by landscape architect Victor Walker, the 9/11 Memorial pays tribute to the Massachusetts victims who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Visitors enjoy the secluded setting, perfect for quiet contemplation.

Swan Boats

First launched in 1877, the Swan Boats have been a Public Garden fixture for more than a century. They were designated a Boston Landmark in 2011, and offer a unique way to spend time on the water. The swan boats will operate in 2023 between April 15th and September 4th, weather permitting. The rides last about 12 to 15 minutes and explore the scenic lagoon.

After exploring the public garden, sample authentic Korean cuisine at a nearby restaurant. You can try bulgogi, bibimbap, and other delicious dishes.
