Founded in 1791, the Massachusetts Historical Society tells the story of the United States "through rare and unique artifacts, documents, and irreplaceable national treasures." Now offering virtual tours, the society's virtual exhibitions allow you to travel back in time from our Cambridge apartments.
Highlights of the Massachusetts Historical Society include:
A German immigrant, Thomas Nast, came to the United States at the age of six. By his mid-teens, he was working as an illustrator. Thomas's drawings for Harper's Weekly swayed political races, and he worked for the popular magazine for 25 years. Thomas Nast: A Life in Cartoons highlights his storied career and showcases both his political and nonpolitical works. This virtual exhibit debuted in September and is not to be missed.
The Massachusetts Historical Society features the largest collection of Thomas Jefferson's private papers. As you scroll through the exhibit, you'll discover letters to his friends John and Abigail Adams and see the architectural drawings for his personal residence. You'll also learn about Thomas Jefferson's flowers and much more.
From Diplomats to Presidents tells the story of the father/son duo of John Adams and John Quincy Adams. It highlights their lives, including their 1777 winter crossing of the Atlantic when John Quincy was 10 years old. The following year, John Quincy began writing a journal, a practice he kept until 1847. He wrote over 15,000 manuscript pages in 51 diary volumes and covered everything from his time as a diplomat to his experiences as president.
